High Temperature Incineration

Over the last c. 30 years High Temperature Incineration (HTI) in the UK has historically centred on the destruction of chemically hazardous waste, primarily through two major facilities, supported by four smaller plants that have traditionally handled specific hazardous waste streams.

As HTIs operate at around 1100°C [1] and are primarily focused on the destruction of hazardous substances they are often referred to as Hazardous Waste Incinerators with their main input tonnage arising from chemical wastes; however a limited amount of Healthcare Waste is also consigned to these facilities for destruction.

Whilst HTI sites are primarily focused on the destruction of hazardous materials WikiWaste does continue to seperately list other types of faciltiies that manage hazardous waste arisings requiring treatment and disposal including (i) Cement Kilns which accept a certain range of hazardous chemical wastes as a substitute fuel; and (ii) Clinical Waste Incinerators for the treatment and disposal of Healthcare Waste. Few Residual Waste EfW facilities in the UK are able to handle hazardous wastes of the type requiring destruction in the HTIs or clinical incinerators.
