Summary
An EfW facility based upon conventional combustion technology, located at Greengairs in North Lanarkshire. The facility is forecast to have a capacity of 300,000 tonnes per annum and will export 25.5MW of electricity to the national grid. It is expected that the facility will become operational by early 2026 after announcing that construction commenced in August 2022[1].
Technology
The EfW will utilize single line air-cooled moving grate with standard combustion technology capable of burning 333,600 tonnes per annum, but with a design capacity of 300,000 tonnes per annum based on 8,000 hours at a throughput of 37.5 tonnes per hour at a NCV of 9.5MJ/kg. It is capable of generating c.30MWe asnd exporting c.27MWe and exporting up to 24.1MWth of heat[2].
Construction
The construction is reported to be by FCC Construction at a cost of around £350 million[3].
Waste Input
The facility is to be constructed on a merchant basis for non-hazardous residual waste, i.e. with no reliance on any long term contracts, in order to offer a solution pending the landfill ban in Scotland [4] which takes effect on 31st December 2025.
