Renewi was formed in 2017 following the merger of Shanks and the Van Gansewinkel Groep, operates in six countries and runs 24 waste treatment facilities for UK councils.
In May 2024 it was announced that the UK Municipal business is to be sold to Biffa, with completion by December 2024[1].
The UK business includes ELWA, Wakefield City Council and the BDR Waste Partnership - Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council and Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council.
Of the 14 million tonnes of waste handled a year, 89% is either recycled or used for energy recovery.[2]
