Rendering is a treatment process through which food waste and other animal by-products are heated at high temperature, sometimes under pressure, to remove moisture and until the fat (tallow) can be separated from the protein material. The tallow can be used to produce tyres and paint; small amounts may also be used as animal feed fertilisers, or as a fuel. The protein element can be dried to produce meat and bone meal which can be used, subject to animal by-product regulations
