The Runcorn facility was built in two phases with 425,000 tonnes per annum capacity in each phase. The initial capacity focused on the solution delivered as part of the [[PFI]] for [[Greater Manchester Combined Authority | GMWDA]] (Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority, now Greater Manchester Combined Authority) and was then subsequently extended to deliver a capacity of 1,100,000 tonnes per annum to reflect the lower [[Calorific Value]] of the fuel delivered than was anticipated in the design for 850,000 tonnes per annum.
