The EU Withdrawal Act received Royal Assent on the 26 June 2018 having formally been refered to as the the 'Great Repeal Bill' which would allow the UK to leave the European Union (EU)<ref name="IOG">[https://www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/explainers/eu-withdrawal-act/ Institute for Government]</ref>. Without the [[EU Withdrawal Act 2018]] when the UK left the EU all the rules and regulations that EU law covers e.g. environmental regulation, workers rights etc would have had no legal standing in the UK creating in effect a "black hole" in the UK Statute book leading to legal uncertainty and confusion<ref name="IOG" />.

The purpose of the Act therefore is to provide certainty and continuity, ensuring the same rules and laws apply immediately after Brexit wherever possible and supporting a smooth transition<ref name="IOG" />.
